What Are You Waiting For

My favorite book is the Alchemist by Paul Coelho, here is why – page 18.  Page 18 asks and then answers this:

“What is the world’s greatest lie?  It is this: that at a certain point in our lives, we lose control of what is happening to us, and our lives become controlled by fate.”

It is understandable if at first this question does not get your wheels turning. For me, and I am guessing for most, ‘the lie’ is not a lightning bolt moment of realization, but a series of moments or people that chip away at your belief that you are in control of making your own dream come true.  Something, I’m not quite sure what, tells you that you cannot even attempt to become what you wish to become.

Two year olds know that they are in control, they also know how to say “NO!” better than most.  They will fight and kick and scream until they get their way.  They wont settle for others’ ideas of what to wear, do or say.  They proudly wear their capes and tutus, and spit out food they do not wish to swallow.  Living the dream, they are.

What I know for sure is that your time on this earth is limited. A teenage girl I know with Osteosarcoma created a Facebook Page, “Natalie Hill Updates.”  She created a bucket list and has asked her friends to help her cross items off her list.  They are simple and they are complicated, drive a Mini Cooper, go to Hawaii, Meet Taylor Swift, Sky Dive.  Every time I visit her page, more items are checked off.  She does not have time to waste, as she has not been promised tomorrow.  Then again, who has?  Natalie is not waiting for anyone or anything to tell her it’s okay to live her dream.

What are you waiting for anyway, someone to tell you that you can, to give you permission or tell you that you are worthy?  Probably not going to happen.  You have been granted permission already by way of being given your life and a desire you can’t explain. Don’t waste your time trying to figure out if the world’s greatest lie is true for you or not, you are in control of what is happening to you.

Don't wait to have a new sofa to have friends over, to lose weight to dance or to get cancer to live.  It will always be too late to do the things you want to do unless you start now.
